Boss Design’s Remi Tub Chair: A Game Changer in Sustainability & Comfort

Founded in 1983 by Brian Murray, Boss Design now manufactures in eight countries across five continents. Continuing its mission to transform spaces with a commitment to sustainability, Boss Design introduces Remi, a tub chair offering next-level comfort and ground breaking sustainability for hospitality, workspace, and residential settings.

Remi’s form is rendered in Bio-Pur® injection moulded polyurethane foam, 75% lower carbon footprint that fossil fuel PU foam

While Remi’s gentle organic lines look soothing and welcoming to the sitter, its form is rendered in Bio-Pur® injection moulded polyurethane foam which has a carbon footprint 75% lower than PU foam made using fossil fuels. Instead, Bio-Pur® is manufactured with biomethane and bio-naphtha derived from agricultural biomass, a renewable resource with a much lower impact on the environment.

Brian Murray, Chairman and founder of Boss Design, says

“We see this as a tipping point in furniture manufacturing. Bio-Pur® is better for the planet and gives our customers the opportunity to drastically reduce their emissions when specifying schemes. There is no compromise in quality or comfort, and we hope manufacturers across the industry will embrace its potential because it’s to everyone’s benefit.”

NATURAL APPEAL

A holistic, nature-inspired philosophy has guided the design process on Remi from start to finish. In harmony with its environmental credentials, the section comprising the chair’s back and arms was inspired by flowers opening in spring and conical seashells found on the beach. This wraps around a seat section, that rises like proving dough, filling the space and capped with a soft, rounded cushion.

Every line, surface and stitch has been carefully considered through a prototype-rich process, with Lead Designer Aaron Clarkson and Development Upholsterer Steve Bloomer painstakingly refining Remi’s curves, surfaces, foam densities and stitching for a silhouette that looks natural and appealing, and a level of comfort that surprises the sitter.

‘A piece that transcends trends and fashion!’

Aaron Clarkson, Lead Designer, Boss Design, says:

“It’s a piece that transcends trends and fashion. Remi looks like it might have been smoothed and rounded by wind or water – a unique, timeless form that will put people at ease, welcoming them to sit, relax and converse. Its natural form is an antidote to the hard edges and corners of the built environment.”

SUSTAINABILITY AND COMFORT

While Bio-Pur® foam reduces the reliance on fossil fuels in Remi’s manufacturing, it doesn’t require new tooling and equipment. In addition, the sustainability of every other component has been considered. The box frame in the seat is made from FSC-certified recyclable plywood, and the chair’s steel frame and based are recyclable. Its screw-in plastic feet are made from recycled waste plastic. Nearly every component has been sourced in the UK, shortening supply chains and thereby lowering its overall carbon footprint.

The seat has a soft dome of moulded foam on webbed suspension for a residential level of comfort. A pocket of cut foam has been included in the lumbar area to cushion the sitter’s back – the area most sensitive to the firmness of injection moulded foam.

Aaron Clarkson, Lead Designer, Boss Design, says:

“For an added sense of freedom and flexibility, there is the option for a 360° swivel, or a 180° swivel with auto-return. The sitter can smoothly adjust their position to converse or enjoy a particular view but when they alight Remi will right itself without burdening housekeeping.”
